Frequently Asked Questions

--------------------------------------------------------------------

What is BCSFA?
BCSFA stands for the British Columbia Science Fiction Association. BCSFA is a general interest science fiction fan organization. We don't specialise in one limited area (as do many SF clubs), but cover the broad spectrum of the SF genre. Club interests include: SF literature, SF art, SF movies and television, SF models and collectables, SF personalities and celebrities, SF comics, SF music, SF trivia, writing SF (a number of our members are published authors), the history of SF, Astronomy, Space Programs past and present, unusual science – in fact, anything at all to do with SF that you can think of – and finally, the phenomenon of SF fandom in and of itself. Who runs BCSFA?
BCSFA has an executive consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Archivist, and BCSFAzine Editor. In addition, members may elect Members-At-Large or other positions. The current executive is listed on the Contact Us page. [Return to Top]
How do I contact BCSFA?
The Contact Us page has E-mail addresses and/or mailing addresses for the current executive. Please note that most of the E-mail addresses on this page do not work as they are. The webmaster has obfuscated the addresses to protect the officers of the club from Spammers. What you need to do to reach most of the executive is to delete the "spam" in the username and domain parts of the address before you send your message. [Return to Top]
How do I join BCSFA?
The How to Join page lists the different kinds of BCSFA memberships and the cost for each. Simply send a cheque for the appropriate amount made out to "WCSFA" to the BCSFA Treasurer, along with a covering letter with your details. [Return to Top]
If the name of the club is "BCSFA", why should I make my cheque out to "WCSFA"?
This is a long story, so settle down while I tell it. Here's a rocking chair for someone who likes to rock, and a big chair for two more to curl up in, and I'll call Rusty... (Whoops, sorry. Different story...) Currently, WCSFA, the West Coast Science Fiction Association is a separate organisation registered as a non-profit society, with its own bank account. However, in the past, BCSFA and WCSFA were the same organisation, with the same bank account. The government wouldn't allow us to register with "BC" in the name, because in their opinion we didn't cover the whole province, but only the lower mainland, so the organisation was called "BCSFA" by the fans, but did business as "WCSFA." Then, a few years ago, the fans decided to divide BCSFA and WCSFA into separate organisations because the executive was so overworked. WCSFA, which took responsibility for VCON, retained the non-profit status, and BCSFA kept the common name. However BCSFA's bank account is still registered under the WCSFA name, because our bank just doesn't "get it." [Return to Top]
